Heavy rains from Hurricane Dean pounded western Mexico on Thursday after the storm killed at least five people in a three-day rampage across the breadth of the country. Hurricane Dean ripped into Mexico's Gulf coast on Wednesday with screaming winds and torrential rain that killed two people, flooded towns and forced thousands into shelters, but then weakened rapidly. Once a monster Category 5 hurricane, Dean was downgraded to a tropical depression Wednesday evening as it rapidly lost strength after battering Mexico's eastern coast. Once a monster hurricane that killed at least 21 people, Dean drenched much of Mexico on Thursday, causing dangerous floods and deadly mudslides even after it lost its punch. Hurricane Dean, at its height a highly destructive Category 5 hurricane, limped across Mexico on Thursday morning as a weakened tropical depression, but still dumped torrential rains that flooded rivers and drenched mudslide-prone mountains. Victor Mariscal scored 30 points, leading coach Nolan Richardson and Mexico to a 100-89 victory over Puerto Rico on Wednesday in the FIBA Americas tournament. In other games, Suns guard Leandro Barbosa scored 30 points as Brazil held off Canada 75-67, while Esteban Batista scored 26 to help Uruguay beat Panama 88-84. It drove terror deep into Mexico, smashing ashore as the third most powerful Atlantic hurricane ever to hit land. The remnants of the once mighty Hurricane Dean triggered deadly mudslides in Mexico Thursday as driving rain drenched a large part of the country, bringing the storm's death toll to at least 25.
