Hurricane Ivo churned across the Pacific toward Mexico on Thursday and is likely to hit the Baja California peninsula early next week, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Guatemala will replace China as Mexico's opponent for an exhibition soccer game at Los Angeles on Oct. 17. Hurricane Ivo slowed its forward motion Thursday morning off Mexico's Pacific coast, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Tropical Storm Ivo was upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane late Wednesday but it was expected to weaken as it approaches Mexico's Pacific coast, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- Hurricane Ivo, headed for a possible weekend brush with Baja California's resorts, slowed its forward motion Thursday as it began to curve toward Mexico's Pacific coast, the National Hurricane Center said. Developers say their proposal for Latin America's tallest tower, at 70 stories, will catapult Mexico City into the world-class ranks. Opponents brand it as illegal, and say it harks back to when authoritarian governments threw up public works projects regardless of public opinion. Tropical Storm Ivo strengthened into a hurricane on Wednesday as it headed over the Pacific toward Mexico's Baja California peninsula, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
